I’ve got a really special treat for you guys today. Something brand new for me that I have been so excited to share with you and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
In high school, Husband and I went to quite a few local Christian concerts. His uncle ran a T-Shirt company and we would always tag along to help out and enjoy the artists. One artist that I can recall seeing multiple times through the years – Karen Shea (then, Karen Spurlock). Since those years I’ve followed her on social media and tried to keep up with her new adventures. She recently reached out to me about possibly helping spread the word about her new single and I was happy to oblige. I even got the chance to spend some time getting to know her and ask her some questions.
Karen just released a BRAND NEW single “Fool For You” that you can get on iTunes today! Be sure to check out this great artist! BUY SINGLE HERE
Meg: Tell me a little about yourself. Where are you from? What instruments do you play? What is your go-to coffee drink?
Karen: I’m from Kenova, WV, but I live in Nashville, TN! I play guitar and some piano. I love coffee a little too much. I think my favorite coffee drink is a white chocolate mocha, but something about drinking coffee made at home with hazelnut creamer is delightful! Also, my husband makes a great iced coffee that I love!

M: I blog a lot about being a young wife and the day-to-day of being a wife. How long have you been married? What’s your favorite date night activity? What is your least favorite housekeeping task?
K: I’ve been married one year and six months. I love it so much! I have an amazing husband! I don’t know that I have one favorite date night activity! We like to try different things. Right now we are seeing how we like hockey games (ha!) But we always love going out for Mexican food, especially to try chips and salsa at different restaurants! My least favorite house task would be laundry! Haha! Not fun!
M: Now, to get a little deeper. Can you tell me a little bit about your relationship with Jesus and why you want to talk about Him in your music?
K: I’d love to! I came to know Christ at sixteen. I had been in a bad relationship for two years. I had some friends that invited me to church camp so I went. While I was there the speaker was talking about how we were designed to have an intimate relationship with Christ so that we can have Christ centered relationships with others. He was telling my story. I knew both of those things were missing from my life but I also knew I desired them. I had to make major changes and it was obvious to me that the first step was accepting Christ and establishing a relationship with Him. It’s important for me to talk about Jesus in my music because I know the difference in living a life with and without Him. Though I grew up in an amazing home, I didn’t grow up knowing about a relationship with Christ. When I accepted Christ at sixteen that’s when true life began for me. I don’t want others to miss out :)!
M: How did you choose/feel called to music? When did you know this was what you wanted to do with your life?
K: Funny story, actually! On the way home from that trip to camp I had just broken up with this guy and I was sitting in the back of the van with headphones in singing “complicated” by Avril Lavigne (so dramatic!) When we got home my youth pastor pulled me aside and asked me if I wanted to join the youth worship team because she heard me singing. From there I began leading worship and writing music. I realized quickly it become a vehicle to reach others and that’s what I wanted to do!
M: What is the inspiration/story for your new single coming out?
K: I went over to my friends house one night (who also happens to be my cowriter, Morgann David and my producer, Paul David’s house). Paul told me he had a track for me to listen to. Morgann and I immediately began putting lyrics to it. At that point in my life I was coming out of a season where I felt pulled different directions and I had to press in to discern who God says to be opposed to who the world says to be. Not only did I have to discern it, I had to choose It. That’s what “Fool For You” is about. I know God chose me first, but I want to do my best to choose Him back.
M: If there is one thing you wanted people to take away from your music, specifically your new single, what would that be?
K: I want to release great music. I want anything I release to be well thought out and well crafted. But, beyond the music I want it to still make an impact when the song goes off. I want it to transform hearts and put faith into action. Specifically for my new single, “Fool For You”, I want it to encourage people to be bold in choosing God. During the writing process we were inspired by 1 Corinthians 1:27 , “For God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise and He chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong”. I want the song to encourage people to choose God even if it seems foolish to the world. We are called to boldness and boldness impacts. I want them to know even if it’s hard in the moment it’s so worth it. I’m learning it with them.
